Robin Hibu is a name that stands out in the Indian Police Service (IPS), not only for his exceptional career achievements but also for his unwavering commitment to social service. As the first IPS officer from Arunachal Pradesh, he has overcome numerous challenges to reach the pinnacle of law enforcement while simultaneously dedicating his life to humanitarian efforts. His journey is one of perseverance, resilience, and an unrelenting drive to uplift marginalized communities.

Early Life and Education

Born in Hong, a remote village in Arunachal Pradesh’s Ziro Valley, Robin Hibu grew up facing the harsh realities of underdeveloped infrastructure and limited educational opportunities. However, his determination and academic brilliance paved the way for his higher education at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi, where he pursued a master’s degree in sociology.

Moving from a small village to a bustling metropolis like Delhi was a major transition for Hibu. He encountered racial discrimination and financial hardships, often traveling in unreserved train compartments and sleeping in makeshift accommodations. These experiences deeply influenced his worldview and strengthened his resolve to work for social justice and equality.

A Pioneering Career in the IPS

In 1993, Robin Hibu became the first person from Arunachal Pradesh to join the Indian Police Service, marking a historic milestone. His career saw him take on key roles, including serving as Joint Commissioner of Police in Delhi and as the Chief Security Officer at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Recognizing the unique challenges faced by Northeastern Indians in metropolitan areas, Hibu played a crucial role in establishing the Special Police Unit for North Eastern Region (SPUNER) in 2014. This initiative aimed to provide a dedicated support system for Northeastern citizens, addressing racial discrimination and ensuring their safety. His contributions have been widely acknowledged, leading to his promotion as Director General of Police (DGP) in June 2024 by the Union Home Ministry of India.

Humanitarian Efforts and ‘Helping Hands’

While excelling in law enforcement, Robin Hibu’s passion for social service led him to establish ‘Helping Hands’ in 2016. This non-profit organization assists Northeastern citizens in distress, providing legal aid, medical assistance, and educational support.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, ‘Helping Hands’ played a vital role in distributing oxygen cylinders, financial aid, and medical resources to those in need. Prominent personalities, including Rajya Sabha MP and boxer Mary Kom, actively contributed to his initiatives. To sustain his humanitarian efforts, Hibu donates a significant portion of his salary, embodying the spirit of selflessness and compassion.
