Taking the reins from outgoing Mayor Cllr Salim Chowdhury, who was praised for his year of service, Cllr Patel enters her new role with a message centered on “Kindness, Caring and Respect.” Her vision for the year aims to strengthen community bonds and bring joy to the borough’s residents, especially as Harrow celebrates its diamond jubilee — marking 60 years of cultural and civic milestones.
A Journey from Humble Beginnings Cllr Patel’s story is one of remarkable perseverance and dedication. Born into a Patidar farming family, she arrived in the UK with her family and just ₹282 to their name. Since then, she has built a meaningful life in Harrow, having moved there in 2000. She began her political journey in 2002 as a councillor representing West Harrow and has continued her service in Belmont ward over the past seven years.
Throughout her political career, she has taken on several leadership roles, including Cabinet Member for Community and Culture, Schools and Children’s Development, and most recently, Environment and Community Safety. Her legacy includes spearheading Harrow’s first "day of action" against fly-tipping, championing community cleanliness, and collaborating with schools to raise awareness among youth on the importance of public hygiene.
Focus on Community Wellbeing As Mayor, Cllr Patel will dedicate her term to supporting two key charities: VIA, which helps individuals and families impacted by drug and alcohol misuse, and Samaritans, a lifeline organisation offering emotional support during difficult times. She has invited residents to join her in supporting these causes, which reflect her deeply rooted values of compassion and service.
“It’s an honour and a privilege to be appointed Mayor of Harrow,” Cllr Patel shared in her acceptance speech. “As Deputy Mayor, I had the pleasure of meeting many inspiring residents and organisations. My theme this year is about building a community rooted in kindness, care, and respect.”
She continued, “As we celebrate our diamond jubilee, I look forward to bringing people together to recognise our shared history and vibrant diversity. I also thank Cllr Salim Chowdhury for his service and hope to build upon his legacy.”

A Leader with Heart and Heritage Beyond her public duties, Mayor Patel is a mother of two and a proud grandmother of four. She enjoys theatre and music and treasures the time spent with her family. Her personal story resonates with many across the borough — a testament to what resilience, community commitment, and hard work can achieve.
Accompanying her in this new chapter is Rupesh Patel, appointed as Consort to the Mayor, and Cllr Yogesh Teli, who will serve as Deputy Mayor.
Cllr Anjana Patel’s appointment not only represents a personal milestone but also sets a powerful example of inclusivity, service, and leadership for future generations in Harrow and beyond. As she begins her term, residents can look forward to a year focused on togetherness, celebration, and care for one another.
