Kalka-Shimla Railway

The train ride from Kalka to Shimla is one of the high points of Shimla tourism. It was built in 1898 and is a narrow-gauge railway that has been added to the World Heritage List by UNESCO. Kufri and Chail

Kufri's summer is characterized by lush green hills, in contrast to the excellent snow slopes that make tobogganing "the" thing to do towards the end of the year. If you happen to be here in January, try your hand at the Kufri "National Snow Statue Competition." Walking past colonial-esque monuments around Chini Bungalow will bring you to the Himalayan Nature Park.

Continue to Koti for lunch in the unexplored gardens surrounded by orchards. Tall pine and deodar forests mark Chail's entrance at a height of about 2250 meters above mean sea level. The splendid summer residence of the Maharaja of Patiala, which was built in 1891 (during the Maharaja's exile from Shimla by the British), is also located in Chail. It is famous for having the highest cricket and polo stadium in the world. The Indo-English architecture on sprawling lawns and wide patios can take you back in time.

Kipling’s Home and Viceregal Lodge

Shimla has a very alluring past, as it was the summer capital of British India. Beneath the Kali Bari temple, there is an ordinary house where the celebrated writer Rudyard Kipling used to stay. The memories of The Jungle Book still linger in this colonial-era house. The Viceregal Lodge was originally built as the summer residence for viceroys and governor-general of India. Even if you are not into history, you can go for a peaceful stroll in the forest.
